Growing up in a military family that moved frequently, Derek’s childhood was spent mostly in Hawaii, shaping his adaptability and resilience. His passion for law came naturally, with his grandfather’s career as a corporate lawyer serving as an inspiration.

After graduating from Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law and being admitted to the Florida Bar in 2000, Derek James built an impressive career defending insurance carriers. He started as a partner at a statewide insurance defense firm, adeptly representing employers, carriers, and self-insured employers across Florida. His exceptional advocacy skills led him to establish and manage the firm’s Miami office in 2013, catering to the diverse legal needs of South Florida’s vibrant community.
